Story Overview
 

A kind old man drops his rice ball down a hole. When he looks down to retrieve it, he discovers a community of mice. The old man allows the mice to keep the rice ball and in return they put on a feast for him, and present him with a gift as he leaves. The greedy old neighbour hears of the kind old man's good fortune and decides to do the same. However, being greedy, he tries to trick the mice out of all their gold ? but things do not turn out as he plans.
　
 
Cultural Notes
 
Omusubi
(Onigiri) 		　 are rice balls. They are a popular and common snack food,equivalent to the western sandwich, often taken on picnics or journeys. They are commonly molded into a triangular shape, filled and wrapped in nori (seaweed). The most common fillings include umeboshi (pickled plum), okaka (bonito flakes flavoured with soy sauce) and tarako (salty cod roe). In the Heian period the nobility gave omusubi to the lower class people to eat outside. They used to be called tonjiki.

Mochi
(O-mochi) 		　 is essentially well-pounded rice which is formed into ‘cakes' and eaten (or displayed) at religious occasions (such as new year). Mochi came to Japan from South East Asia along with rice cultivation. Mochi is best made with special, very-short grain rice called mochi-kome (mochi rice). See also はなさかじいさん
　 　 　
Mochi-tsuki 　 pounding of rice to make mochi . This requires a large mortar, a wooden mallet and considerable skill and coordination. Mochi-tsuki is usually done as part of New Year celebrations.

ナレーター 1 　 むかし　むかし、あるところに　おじいさんと　おばあさんが　すんで　いました。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 Once upon a time there lived an old man and an old woman.
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 では、　そろそろ　きを　きりに　いってきます。。
　 　 　
おばあさん 　 はい、おむすびを　どうぞ。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 The old man was a woodcutter. Each day he would go to the forest to chop wood.
　 　  
ナレーター 2 　 And each day the old woman would send him on his way with an enormous rice ball for his lunch.
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 いってきます。
　 　 　
おばあさん 　 いってらっしゃい。
　 　 　
　 　 (Old man walks to forest and starts chopping a tree.)

ナレーター 1 　 すると、かわいい　ねずみが　でて　きました。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 Suddenly, two cute mice popped out of the hole.
　 　 　
ねずみ 1 　 おじいさん、おむすび　ありがとう。
　 　 　
ねずみ 2 　 おれいに　わたしたちの　うちに　あんないします。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 In thanks for the rice ball, the two mice offered to show the old man around their home.
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 でも、その　あなは　ちいさいです。　わたしは　はいれません。
　 　 　
ねずみ 1 　 だいじょうぶですよ。　わたしの　しっぽを　もって　ください。

ナレーター 2 　 The old man thought that there was no way he could fit down the tiny hole, but the mice instructed him to hold their tails and close his eyes.

SCENE 2 - In the home of the mice
　 　 　
ねずみ 1 　 はい、めを　あけて　ください。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 When the old man opened his eyes, he discovered he was in a large room, where many mice were pounding rice to make mochi for the coming New Year celebrations.
　 　 　
ねずみ-たち 　 (pounding rice) 　ぺったん　ぺったん　ぺったんこ　 ぺったん　ぺったん　ぺったんこ
　 　 　
ねずみ 2 　 どうぞ　すわって　ください。
　 　 　
　 　 （Mice enter carrying trays of mochi and sake.)
　 　 　
ねずみ 1 　 おじいさん、どうぞ　たべて　ください。
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 いただきます。
　 　 　
　 　 (Old man begins to eat and drink, mice continue to bring more mochi and sake.)
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 おじいさんは　もちを　たくさん　たべました。　さけを　たくさん　のみました。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 The old man ate and drank until he could eat and drink no more. Then it was time for him to go home.
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 おなかが　いっぱいです。　ごちそうさまでした。 では、そろそろ　かえります。
　 　 　
ねずみたち 　 おじいさん、おむすび　ありがとう。　これは　 おみやげです。

ナレーター 1 　 さて、となりの　よくばりじいさんが　この　はなしを　ききました。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 A greedy old man lived next door to the old man. When he heard the old man’s story, he decided that he too would visit the mice and receive some gold.
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 よくばりじいさんは　おおきい　おむすびを　つくりました。　そして　あなに　おとしました。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 The greedy old man made an enormous rice ball, took it to the forest and dropped it down the hole.
　 　 　
よくばりじいさん 　 はやく、はやく。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 The greedy old man waited impatiently for the mice to come out of the hole.

SCENE 4 - In the home of the mice
ねずみ-たち 　 ぺったん　ぺったん　ぺったんこ。
　 　 　
ねずみ 1 　 はい、めを　あけて　ください。
　 　 　
ねずみ 2 　 どうぞ　すわって　ください。
　 　 　
　 　 （Mice start to bring in mochi and sake.)
　 　 　
ねずみ 1 　 どうぞ　たべて…
　 　 　
よくばりじいさん 　 もちと　さけは　いりません。　おみやげは　どこ ですか。
　 　 　
　 　 （Mice scurry to prepare a bag of mochi and gold. In the meantime the greedy old man spies a big box of gold coins.)
　 　 　
よくばりじいさん 　 あの　おおきい　はこが　いいですね。　どうやって もらいましょう...　あ、そうだ！　ねこの　なきごえを　だしましょう。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 The greedy old man decided to frighten the mice by meowing like a cat, so that he could steal the big box of gold coins.
　 　 　
よくばりじいさん 　 にゃおう！　にゃおう！
　 　 　
ねずみたち 　 きゃあ　こわい！　ねこだ！　
　 　 　
　 　 （Mice run around and away. Stage becomes dark.)

ナレーター 2 　 The greedy old man loaded as many gold coins as he could carry into his kimono, but when he tried to leave...

　 　 （Greedy old man searches around blindly for the entrance to the hole.)
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 ... he was unable to find the exit in the darkness.
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 よくばりじいさんは　もぐらに　なりました。　いまも、　でぐちを　さがして　います。
