Story Overview
 

Kasajizoo takes place on the eve of O-shoogatsu （New Year). A poor old man and his wife must try and sell their hand-made straw hats in order to buy some rice cakes to eat for New Year's Day. However, the old man is unable sell a single hat. As he is returning home he comes across six Jizoo statues. It is a cold evening, and the old man takes pity on the statues and gives each one a straw hat. However, he is one short, so gives the remaining Jizoo his own hat. That night the six Jizoo repay the old man's thoughtfulness with gifts of food, clothing and gold.
　
 
Cultural Notes
 
Jizoo
O-jizoo-sama 		　 are small, stone statues of the guardian deity of children. They are usually erected in memory of a specific child, and people will leave offerings (such as small toys, milk bottles etc) around them, and place knitted red caps on their heads. You can find Jizoo everywhere in Japan.
　 　  
Kasa
Sugegasa 		　 These days, when kasa is referred to, we mean ‘umbrella'. However, originally kasa referred to a specific type of straw hat worn by farmers.

ナレーター 1 　 The title of this play is Kasajizoo. A kasa is a bamboo hat. A Jizoo　is a small, stone Buddhist statue which protects children.
A Jizoo usually has a bib, just like a baby, and stands at the roadside.
　 　  
ナレーター 2 　 Today is the day before New Year's Day. It is very cold and snowy.
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 むかし　むかし あるところに　おじいさんと　おばあさんが　すんで　いました。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 Once upon a time there lived an old man and an old woman.
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 びんぼうでした。　まいにち　かさを　つくりました。そして　まちで　うりました。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 They were very poor. Every day they made straw hats to sell in the town.
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 あしたは　おしょうがつです。　おもちが　たべたいですね。
　 　 　
おばあさん 　 そうですね。　じゃあ　この　かさを　うって　もちを　かいましょう。

SCENE 2 - In the town
　 　 　
　 　 (Curtains open to show town scene)
　 　 　
ナレーター 1   つぎのひ、　おじいさんは　かさを　いつつ　もって　まちに　いきました。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 The next morning the old man went into town, taking 5 straw hats with him to sell.
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 ひとつ、ふたつ、みっつ、よっつ、いつつ …. いってきます。
　 　 　
おばあさん 　 いってらっしゃい。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 でも、ひとつも　うれませんでした。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 But he couldn't even sell one straw hat.
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　

おじいさんは　がっかりしました。

　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 The old man was very disappointed, and started to walk home.
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 ざんねんです。　しかたない･･･..かえりましょう。
　 　 　
　 　 (Old man picks up hats and starts to walk home - off stage)
　 　 　
　 　 　
SCENE 3 - On the way home
　 　 　
　 　 (Old man walks onto stage, then stops and looks into the distance - toward the 6 Jizoo)
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 おや？　あれは　なんでしょう。
　 　 　
　 　 (Walks up to the Jizoo)
　 　 　
　 　 ああ　おじぞうさまですね。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 The old man brushed some snow off the shoulder of one of the statues.
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 かわいそうに！　さむいでしょう。
You must be so cold, but I've got just the thing for you.
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 おじいさんは　じぞうに　かさを　かぶせました。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 The old man took his straw hats and put them on the statues.
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 どうぞ。　ひとつ、ふたつ、みっつ、よっつ、いつつ …　あれ！　たりない！
I don't have enough straw hats.
はい、わたしの　かさを　どうぞ。
　 　 　
　 　 （Takes off his own hat and places it on the head of the sixth statue.)
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 おじいさんは　じぞうに　かさを　あげました。　そして　うちに　かえりました。
うちでは　おばあさんが　まっていました。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 After he had given the last Jizoo his own hat, the old man continued home. The old woman was waiting for him by the fire.
　 　 　
　 　 　
SCENE 4 - At home (night)
　 　 　
　 　 (Old man enters the house, old woman is sitting by the fire.)
　 　 　
おばあさん 　 おじいさん、さむいでしょう。
You must be freezing.
はやく　ここに　すわって　ください。
　 　 　
　 　 (Old man sits next to the old woman)
　 　 　
　 　 あれ！　おじいさんの　かさは　どこですか。
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 おじぞうさまに　あげました。　
I couldn't sell any of our straw hats and on my way home I saw six Jizoo standing out in the cold, so I gave them the hats. There wasn't enough, so I gave my hat to the last one. I'm sorry that there won't be any rice cakes this year.
　 　 　
おばあさん 　 おじいさんは　やさしいですね。
It's better to do a kind thing like that than have all the rice cakes in the world. We'll get along without any rice cakes for New Year.
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 おやすみなさい。
　 　 　
おばあさん 　 おやすみなさい。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 そのばん　おじいさんと　おばあさんは、へんな　おとを　ききました。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 However, that night, the old man and old woman were woken by a strange chanting, and a loud scraping noise.
　 　  
　 　 （Jizoo move toward the house, dragging an enormous rice cake.)
　 　 　
じぞう 　 よいやさ、よいやさ
しゃーん　しゃーん
よいやさ、よいやさ
しゃーん　しゃーん
　 　 　
おばあさん・おじいさん 　 あれ！　なんでしょう。　だれですか。
　 　 　
じぞう 　 わたしたちは　じぞうです。　おじいさん、かさを　ありがとう。　これは　おれいです。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 It was the six Jizoo who had been given the straw hats earlier that day.
　 　  
　 　 (Old man and old woman jump out of bed, run to the door and open it. The Jizoo are already walking away.)
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 おおきな　おもちですね。
　 　 　
おばあさん 　 おじぞうさま、ありがとうございました。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 The old man had done the Jizoo a favour when he gave them the straw hats.
　 　  
ナレーター 2 　 So the Jizoo brought the rice cakes and other gifts to show their gratitude.
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 おじいさんと　おばあさんは　いい　おしょうがつを　すごしました。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2
