Story Overview
 

Hanasakajiisan is a tale of kindness overcoming greed and cruelty. It tells the story of a kind old man and old woman who are led to good fortune by their little dog. Their neighbour is a greedy old man who tries to take advantage of their good fortune, but is continually thwarted and eventually caught and jailed for his greedy ways.
　
 
Cultural Notes
 
Mochi
O-mochi 		　 pounded rice cakes traditionally made and eaten at New Year. Mochi is made by pounding mochi-gome (a special, very short-grained rice which becomes very sticky and glutinous when pounded) in a big wooden mortar with a wooden mallet. (See おむすびころりん)
　 　  
Sakura
(cherry blossoms)		 　 The word sakura is generally used for those species of cherry tree appreciated for their blossoms rather than grown for their fruit. Sakura is mentioned often in Japanese literature, both ancient and modern. Traditional Japanese values of purity and simplicity are thought to be reflected in the form and colour of the cherry blossom. Since it flowers very briefly, the cherry blossom also became a symbol of the Japanese appreciation of beauty.

ナレーター 1 　 ふたりは　いぬを　いっぴき　かって　いました。　なまえは　しろでした。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 The old man and old woman owned a dog called Shiro.
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 あるひ　おじいさんと　おばあさんと　しろは　はたけに　いきました。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 One day the old man, the old woman and Shiro went out to plough their field.
　 　 　
しろ 　 わん　わん、わん　わん。　ここですよ。　ほって、ほって。

ナレーター 1 　 Shiro was obviously very excited, and insisted that the old man dig in a certain spot.

ナレーター 2 　 The old man and old woman could hardly believe their eyes.
The hole was full of gold and silver coins. They began to scoop the coins from the hole.

　 　 (Enter greedy old man. Hides behind a tree.)
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 しかし …

わたしは　よくばりじいさんです。　わたしも　 きんと　ぎんが　ほしいです。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 It was the greedy old man from next door. He wanted the gold and silver coins too.
　 　 　
よくばりじいさん 　 (to old man and old woman)
ねえ、ねえ、しろ　かして。
　 　 　
　 　 （Greedy old man grabs Shiro and starts dragging him away)
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 The greedy old man wanted Shiro to find some gold and silver in his field too.
　 　 　
よくばりじいさん 　 さあ、きんと　ぎんは　どこですか。　ここ？　ここ？
　 　 　
しろ 　 いたい！　いたい！　やめて　ください。　きゃん　きゃん。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 Poor Shiro was in pain. He tried to get away, but could only kick his legs.
　 　  
ナレーター 2 　 The greedy old man thought that Shiro had found the gold and silver.
　 　 　
　 　 (Greedy old man pushes Shiro away and starts digging)
　 　 　
よくばりじいさん 　 やった！！　わたしも　おかねもちですね。　あれ！　これは　なんですか。　ごみ!!
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 There was only a pile of rubbish in the hole.
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 The greedy old man was furious. He beat Shiro so savagely with his spade that poor Shiro was killed.
　 　 　
　 　 　
SCENE 2 - The old man's garden
　 　 　
おじいさん
おばあさん		 　 えん　えん、えん　えん。　しろ、さようなら。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 The old man and old woman buried Shiro in the garden and planted a little pine tree over his grave.
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 (planting tree)
この　まつの　きを　みると、しろを　おもいだしますね。
　 　 　
おばあさん   　 (watering tree)
そうですね。　しろ、おやすみなさい。　またあしたね。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 The next morning, when the old man and woman got up...
　 　 　
　 　 (Pine tree grows)
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 あれ！　おばあさん、みてください。
　 　 　
おばあさん 　 すごい！　おおきく　なりましたね。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 The pine tree had grown enormous overnight.
　 　  
ナレーター 2 　 The old man and old woman were convinced that it contained the spirit of Shiro.
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 しろの　たましいでしょう。　しろは　おもちが　だいすきでしたね。
　 　 　
おばあさん 　 そうでしたね。　では、うすと　きねを　つくりましょう。　そして、おもちを　つくりましょう。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 The old man and old woman decided to make a mortar and pestle from the pine tree. Then they would make some mochi to place on Shiro's grave.

おばあさん 　 さいしょに、おこめを　いれて…
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 First the old woman put the rice into the mortar.
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 つぎに、わたしが　つきましょう。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 Then the old man began to pound the rice.
　 　 　
コーラス 　 (As old man pounds)

ナレーター 2 　 But when the old woman looked into the mortar to check the mochi - instead she saw...

ナレーター 1 　 A pile of money.
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 Naturally, the greedy old man was spying again.
　 　 　
よくばりじいさん 　 わたしも　おかねが　ほしいです。
(goes over and points at mortar and pestle)　
ねえ、ねえ、　うすと　きね　かして。
(grabs mortar and pestle and runs to his house with them.)
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 The old man grabbed some rice, threw it into the mortar and started pounding.
　 　 　
コーラス 　 ぺったん　ぺったん　ぺったら　ぽん
ぺったん　ぺったん　ぺったん　ぺったん。
　 　 　
よくばりじいさん 　 (looking into mortar)
おや？　おかね、でませんね。　あら！　
なんですか。
　 　 　
　 　 (Stones come flying out of the mortar.)
　 　 　
コーラス 　 ごつん　ごつん …
　 　 　
よくばりじいさん 　

いたい！　いたい！
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 Instead of money, stones came flying out of the mortar. They hit the greedy old man all over his body.
　 　 　
よくばりじいさん 　 うーん、あぶないですね。　もやしましょう。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 The greedy old man threw the mortar and pestle into the fire and burnt it all up.
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 The old man and old woman were horrified.
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 あれは　とても　だいじな　うすと　きねですよ！
　 　 　
おばあさん 　 しろの　たましいです。　かえして　ください。
　 　 　
よくばりじいさん 　 じゃ、どうぞ、　はいを　とって　ください。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 The old man scraped up the ashes of the mortar and pestle, put them in a bamboo basket and started carrying them home.
　 　 　
　 　 　
SCENE 3 - The river
　 　 　
　 　 (Old man walks in carrying the bamboo basket and sits under one of the trees.)
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 おもいですね。　ちょっと　やすみましょう。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 Suddenly a strong wind started to blow.
　 　  
ナレーター 2 　 Some of the ashes flew up out of the basket and landed in the tree the old man was resting under.
　 　 　
　 　 (Blossoms bloom all over the bare tree.)
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 なに？　わあ …　きれい！
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 Beautiful cherry blossoms bloomed all over the tree where the ashes had landed.
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 ふしぎですね。　もう　いちど　やって　みましょう。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 The old man was amazed. He threw some ashes on another tree.
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 また　さきました。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 And another...
　 　 　
おじいさん 　 すごいですね。　わたしは　はなさかじいさんです。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 ...and another, until all the trees around him were bright with blossoms.
　 　 　
　 　 (Enter Lord and Samurai as chorus sings SAKURA song and old man continues to throw ashes on the trees.)
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 While the old man was busy, a Lord and his samurai came along and stopped to watch the activity.
　 　 　
とのさま 　 おお！　すばらしいですね。　
おじいさん、　これどうぞ。
　 　 　
　 　 (Lord gives old man a bag of jewels)
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 Of course, you-know-who was watching and wanted some jewels for himself.
　 　 　
よくばりじいさん 　 わたしも　ほしいです。
　 　 　
　 　 (Runs over to old man and grabs a handful of ash)
　 　 　
　 　 ねえ、　ねえ、　はい　かして …
　 　 　
　 　 (Throws ashes over tree nearest the Lord, spilling some ash on the Lord)
　 　 　
よくばりじいさん 　 (to Lord)
とのさま、みて　ください。　わたしも　はなさかじいさんです。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 Naturally, nothing happened. However, the Lord was very angry to be covered in ash.
　 　 　
とのさま 　 わっ、きたない！　わるい　じいさんですね。
(to the samurai)
さあ、　わるい　じいさんを　ろうやに　いれて。
　 　

　
ナレーター 2 　 The samurai tied the greedy old man up, and took him away to jail where he spent the rest of his life.
　 　  
ナレーター 1
