Story Overview
 

This is an adaptation of the traditional folktale (which apparently originated in Cuba). It is a simple story (with a moral message) of a little red hen who decides to bake a cake. She asks for help from her farmyard friends several times along the way. However, none of the other animals are interested in helping until the cake is ready to be eaten.
　
 
Cultural Notes
 
Animals in folktales 　 when animals appear in world folktales they are usually humanised (ie. they talk, move and dress as humans do) and serve the purpose of teaching a simple lesson about human nature. (ref: http://falcon.jmu.edu/~ramseyil/tradcarney.htm) In Japanese folktales, the key role of animals is similar, although specific animals are generally associated with certain characteristics, virtues and symbolism.

SCENE 1 - In the farmyard
　
ナレーター 1 　 むかし　むかし　あるところに　のうじょうが　ありました。　のうじょうには　どうぶつが　たくさん すんで　いました。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 Once upon a time there were some animals who lived together on a farm.
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 しょうかい　します。
　 　 　
　 　 (As each animal is called, s/he moves to the front of the stage and bows.)
　 　 　
　 　 いぬです。
ねこです。
うしです。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 ぶたです。
うまです。
そしてにわとりです。　ちいさな　あかい　にわとりです。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 Every day, at about 3 o'clock, the farmers all stopped work, and sat down for their afternoon tea. Every day they had a delicious looking cake. Every day, all the animals watched enviously as the farmers ate their cake.
　 　 　
にわとり 　 おいしそうですね。　ケーキ…　たべたいですね。
　 　 　
みんな 　 そうですね。　でも　わたしたちの　ケーキは　ありませんね。
　 　 　
にわとり 　 じゃ、ケーキを　つくりましょう。
　 　 　
みんな 　 はい、つくりましょう。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 All the animals decided to make their own cake.
　 　  
ナレーター 1 　 First, they had to collect all the ingredients.
　 　 　
にわとり 　 たまごが　あります。
　 　 　
うし 　 ミルクが　あります。
　 　 　
ぶた 　 さとうが　あります。

ナレーター 2 　 Oh dear. It looks like they have everything they need except for flour.
　 　 　
ナレーター 1   They can't make a cake without flour. I wonder what they will do?

じゃ、こむぎを　うえましょう。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 Ah, the Little Red Hen has suggested they grow some wheat. But, look at this...
　 　 　
にわとり 　 てつだって　ください。
　 　 　
みんな 　 えー！　いやです。
　 　 　
にわとり 　 どうしてですか。
　 　 　
うし 　 つかれます。　It will be tiring.
　 　 　
うま 　 めんどくさいです。　It's way too much trouble.
　 　 　
いぬ 　 いそがしいです。　We're too busy.
　 　 　
ぶた 　 つまらないです。　It sounds boring.
　 　 　
ねこ 　 ねむいです。　We're too tired.
　 　 　
にわとり 　 じゃ、じぶんで　うえます。
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 All the other animals were too lazy to help the Little Red Hen, so she decided to grow the wheat herself.
　 　 　
　 　 (Curtains close as Little Red Hen starts sowing the wheat while the other animals look on.)
　 　 　
　 　 　
SCENE 2 - In the barnyard
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 After a while, the wheat was grown and harvested, and the Little Red Hen was ready to grind the wheat into flour. She asked the animals to help.
　 　 　
にわとり 　 てつだってください。
　 　 　
みんな 　 えー！　いやです。
　 　 　
にわとり 　 どうしてですか。
　 　 　
うし 　 つかれます。
　 　 　
うま 　 めんどくさいです。
　 　 　
いぬ 　 いそがしいです。
　 　 　
ぶた 　 つまらないです。
　 　 　
ねこ 　 ねむいです。
　 　 　
にわとり 　 じゃ、じぶんで　します。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 Again, none of the animals would help the Little Red Hen, so she ground the flour by herself.
　 　 　
にわとり 　 さあ　ケーキを　つくりましょう。
　 　 　
　 　 (Little Red Hen starts to mix ingredients together, but is finding it difficult.)
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 The Little Red Hen was having trouble mixing all the ingredients together, so she asked for some help.
　 　 　
にわとり 　 てつだって　ください。
　 　 　
みんな 　 えー！　いやです。
　 　 　
にわとり 　 どうしてですか。
　 　 　
うし 　 つかれます。
　 　 　
うま 　 めんどくさいです。　
　 　 　
いぬ 　 いそがしいです。
　 　 　
ぶた 　 つまらないです。
　 　 　
ねこ 　 ねむいです。

ナレーター 2 　 Of course, none of the animals would help mix the cake, so the Little Red Hen did it by herself.

さあ、　オーブンに　いれましょう。
　 　 　
　 　 (The Little Red Hen tries to carry the mixture to the oven, but it is too heavy.)
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 Then the cake was ready to bake. But the pan was very heavy, and the Little Red Hen found it difficult to carry. She asked the animals to help her.
　 　 　
にわとり 　 おもいです。　てつだって　ください。
　 　 　
みんな 　 えー！　いやです。
　 　 　
にわとり 　 どうしてですか。
　 　 　
うし 　 つかれます。
　 　 　
うま 　 めんどくさいです。
　 　 　
いぬ 　

いそがしいです。
　 　 　
ぶた 　 つまらないです。
　 　 　
ねこ 　 ねむいです。
　 　 　
にわとり 　 じゃ、　じぶんで　もちます。
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 As expected, none of the animals would help her carry the cake to the oven, so the Little Red Hen struggled, but did it herself.
　 　  
ナレーター 1 　 As the cake baked, a delicious smell wafted out into the farmyard. All the animals came into the barn.
　 　 　
うし 　 いい　においですね。
　 　 　
ねこ 　 そうですね。
　 　 　
いぬ 　 ケーキの　においですね。
　 　 　
ぶた 　 にわとりさんの　ケーキですね。
　 　 　
うま 　 そうですね。　おいしそう。。。
　 　 　
　 　 (Little Red Hen takes cake out of the oven and puts it on the table. Animals crowd around.)
　 　 　
にわとり 　 できましたよ。　ナイフで　きりましょう。　そして …
　 　 　
ナレーター 2 　 The Little Red Hen started to cut herself a slice of the cake to eat. The animals asked her if they could have some too.
　 　 　
にわとり 　 そうですね。　ううん …　
じぶんで　こむぎを　うえました。
じぶんで　こむぎこを　つくりました。
じぶんで　ケーキを　つくりました。
みんな、　てつだいませんでしたね。　だから …
　 　 　
ナレーター 1 　 The Little Red Hen grew the wheat herself, ground it herself, mixed the cake herself, put it in the oven herself... so she decided she would also...
　 　 　
にわとり 　 じぶんで　たべます。 いただきます。
　 　 　
　 　 (Little Red Hen puts a huge slice of cake in her mouth.)
