Story Overview

Is this a typical day in the Japanese classroom? Students enter the room, the roll is called and the teacher is ready to commence the lesson... but the students have a different idea. They all need a drink, need to borrow a pencil, then need to go to the toilet. By the time they are all ready - the lesson is over.

Cultural Notes

School in Japan

is compulsory from Year 1 through to Year 9 (the end of Junior High School). Lessons commence at around 8.15 am and officially finish anywhere from 2pm ~ 4pm (depending on school level). English is compulsory in most Junior and Senior High Schools. It is also being taught in an increasing number of Primary Schools throughout the country.

せんせい		どうぞ、　はいって　　ください。　はやく、　はいって　　ください。　みなさん　おはようございます。

がくせい		せんせい、　おはようございます。

せんせい		すわって　　ください。　(Opens roll) 　Casey さん。

Casey		はい。

せんせい		Alex くん。

Alex		はい。

せんせい		Ali さん …　Ali さん?　Aliさん、いますか。

がくせい		いいえ、いません。

せんせい		Freya さん。

Freya		はい。

せんせい		Jeremy くん。

Jeremy		はい。

せんせい		Stephen くん。

Stephen		はい。

せんせい		じゃ、はじめましょう。

		(Ali enters, late.)

Ali		せんせい、　おそくなって　すみません。

せんせい		だめですねえ。　Aliさん、はやく　すわって　　ください。

		(All students in quick succession stand and ask Sensei if they can have a drink.)

Casey		せんせい、　のどが　からからです。　みずを　のんでも　いいですか。

Alex		ぼくも、　のどが　からからです。　みずを　のんでも　いいですか。

Freya		わたしも、　のどが　からからです。　みずを　のんでも　いいですか。

Jeremy		ぼくも、　のどが　からからです。　みずを　のんでも　いいですか。

Stephen		ぼくも。

Ali		わたしも。

せんせい		はやく　して　ください。 (All students take a swift drink, with slurps, from their drink bottle.) じゃ、はじめましょう。　(Holds up a hiragana card.)　ノートに　かいて　ください。

		(All students stand in quick succession and ask for a pencil.)

Casey		せんせい、　えんぴつが　ありません。　かして　ください。

Alex		ぼくも　えんぴつが　ありません。　かして　ください。

Freya		わたしも　ありません。　かして　ください。

Jeremy		ぼくも　ありません。　かして　ください。

Stephen		ぼくも。

Ali		わたしも

せんせい		(very crossly, gives each student a pencil) 　どうぞ、どうぞ (etc) じゃ、はじめましょう。　(Holds up hiragana card.) ノートに　かいて　ください。

		(Students stand in quick succession and ask if they can go to the toilet.)

Casey		せんせい、　トイレに　いっても　いいですか。

Alex		ぼくも　トイレに　いっても　いいですか。

Freya		わたしも　トイレに　いっても　いいですか。

Jeremy		ぼくも　トイレ。

Stephen		ぼくも　トイレ。

Ali		わたしも。

せんせい		(very cross)　だめです！すわって　ください！

Casey		せんせいは　crankyですね。　せんせい　きらい！

Alex		ぼくも。

Freya		わたしも。

Jeremy		ぼくも。

Stephen		ぼくも。

Ali		わたしも。

せんせい		みなさん、しずかに　…　しずかに　…　はあ、　もう　だめです。 (Bell rings.)

がくせい		さようなら　せんせい。
